Theme:  The Foundation of the Church – The STONE

by Hank & Sheryl McKinley

The believers of the first church obeyed Jesus and waited in Jerusalem (Acts 1:4):

On one occasion, while He was eating with them, He gave them this command:  “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.  For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

By obeying Jesus’ instructions and remaining in Jerusalem, the believers were blessed by God and miraculously received the Power of the Holy Spirit (John 14: 25-27) on the Day of Pentecost (A Jewish celebration that occurred 50 days after the Passover which was also called the “Feast of Weeks”{Exodus 34:22}, the “Feast of Harvest” {Exodus 23:16}, and the “Day of First Fruits” {Numbers 28:26}) (Acts 2:1, 20:16 and I Corinthians 16:8).

If Jesus’ believers had been disobedient and not followed his instruction, then they would have never received the Holy Spirit from God and the “first church” would not have been established.

Have you ever been disobedient?  Absolutely!  We all have.  Whether it is disobedience to our parents, teachers, brothers, sisters, employers, etc…., there are always consequences.  More importantly, have you been disobedient to God?

Stop and think!  Have you obeyed all of God’s commands? Do you read and study the Bible?  Do you pray?  Do you regularly attend and are involved in a good church?  Do you give of your time, talents and treasures?

In order to receive all of the blessings that God has in store for us, we must be obedient to his guidance (Bible study, prayer, fellowship with other believers, sharing our faith with non-believers, etc….).

Family Connection: Obedience, are you showing it?

How can you better serve God and show your OBEDIENCE?   Write down a list of the thoughts that you and your family discuss.  Consider ways that you can better use your time, talents and treasures for God.

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.  Do what it says.” (James 1:22 NIV)
